How You Show Up Defines Your Standing

About the series. The 21st Century Communicator: Currency, Code and Craft is a Constellar series by Astrum on what it takes to stay relevant and be valued as communications is reshaped by disruption and technology. Each article explores one of three capabilities: Currency, the impact you drive for the business; Code, how you carry yourself and operate; and Craft, the depth and counsel that set you apart. This piece is about Code: how you carry yourself and operate, and what you add to the team and the culture around you.

Your value as a professional is defined by two things: the contribution you make and the confidence you inspire. Communications is a collective endeavour. Ideas, insights and outcomes are shaped by teams working together. Your standing is determined not only by the quality of your work, but also by how you strengthen the people and thinking around you.

Individual brilliance may earn recognition, but the ability to elevate collective performance earns trust and respect. Competence earns you a place at the table. Character and conduct determine your influence at it.

The PRCAI SPRINT 2026 report, partnered by Astrum, points to evolving team structures and generational expectations. Yet the fundamentals of professional value remain unchanged. Here are the qualities that distinguish professionals who consistently earn trust, respect and influence.

Leadership is not defined by a title

Leadership in a room has little to do with rank. You can lead as the youngest person on the team, when you see the answer and carry it with conviction, and you can follow at the peak of your career, when someone else knows the ground better. The professionals who build advocates move easily between the two, reading what the moment needs rather than what their title allows. That flexibility, leading and following as the work demands, is what separates the ones who rise.

Authority is earned, credibility is demonstrated

Authority comes from a consistent record of results, sound judgement and leading by example, not designation alone. Credibility is built when words and actions align, and when integrity and transparency are evident in every interaction. Together, they create the confidence that earns trust, respect and influence. What you say sets expectations. What you do establishes your reputation.

Character shows under pressure

Character is revealed under pressure. The ability to remain composed, exercise sound judgement and act with integrity when circumstances are difficult distinguishes a trusted professional. Being valued is not the same as being liked. It takes courage to challenge the consensus, speak an uncomfortable truth and stand by what is right, even when it is unpopular. Popularity may earn approval, but conviction, backed by conduct, earns lasting trust and respect.

Listen hardest, lift others

Trust is strengthened through candour, respect and accountability. The ability to receive feedback without defensiveness, act on it with maturity and offer constructive counsel when it matters reflects professional confidence. Difficult conversations require both courage and empathy: the judgement to know what must be said and the sensitivity to know how and when to say it. Avoiding discomfort may preserve harmony in the moment. Addressing it with integrity builds lasting trust.

What it means for the 21st century communicator

As technology transforms how work gets done, the differentiator will increasingly be how professionals think, behave and contribute. Technical proficiency and execution excellence remain essential, but the ability to exercise judgement, build trust, navigate complexity and elevate collective performance will distinguish those who progress into strategic advisory roles.

The future of a communications career will depend not only on individual expertise, but on the professional reputation built through consistent conduct, contribution and results. These are the qualities that turn competence into credibility and credibility into influence.

Competence earns you a place at the table. Character, judgement and the value you create determine your standing at it.
